How can I connect Google Custom Search correctly in the Search widget?

The Search widget only works with live results after valid Google Custom Search credentials are connected in the Content tab.

This screenshot should show the exact credential fields and the verify action.

  1. Open your Search widget and go to Content.

  2. In Connect Search Engine, enter:

    • Search Engine ID (cx) from Google Programmable Search

    • API Key from Google Cloud (Custom Search API enabled)

  3. Click Verify & save credentials.

  4. Confirm the status changes to Search engine connected.

  5. Test a real query in preview to ensure results appear.

Use this setting when the search overlay opens but returns empty/error results.

Check this if the result does not look right:

  • If it does not connect, verify the API key is active and not restricted incorrectly.

  • If results are irrelevant, review your Google Programmable Search engine scope/sites.

  • If it was connected before but no longer works, reconnect credentials using Disconnect then save again.
